Designer James Perse, who has grappled with severe asthma throughout his life, has just designed this light blue T-shirt to benefit the Denver-based National Jewish Health facility, which specializes in research and patient care for those suffering from respiratory problems. "I know first-hand that breathing is a luxury people take for granted," says Perse of his motivation for designing the T-shirt.
But the message emblazoned on the T-shirt is absolutely universal and can have many different interpretations. Just think about it. What's the first thing we tell people when they're crying hysterically or panicking about something? We say, "Take a deep breath" or "Just breathe for a second." When a woman is giving birth, she is advised to keep her calm and handle the pain by steadying her breathing. Can't keep up with the competition? We tell 'em, "Breathe" (hence the Fabolous song, where he boasts, "Look look, they hearts racin'/They start chasin'/But I'm so fast when I blow past/That they can't BREATHE/In the presence of the man/Your future looks better than ya past if you present with the man /You betta BREATHE"). Whether you're anxious, stressed, in pain, or overtaxed, breathing — and remaining calm — is always the first step.
Says Perse, "The JUST BREATHE campaign reminds people of how important it is to be able to do something as simple as breathing, not just as it’s related to respiratory diseases but also when dealing with the challenges of everyday life.” Well, you heard the man — who can't get down with that message?
