No More Hair Scares With John Frieda’s Root Awakening Line

JF Root Awakening Nourishing Group

If you've been reading SickaThanAverage.com long enough to pick up on some of my weird little perks, you'll remember that I'm not big on minty scents or flavors (toothpaste, mouthwash and gum notwithstanding). For me, candy canes are merely decorative, mojitos are about as appetizing as castor oil daiquiris, and York Peppermint Patties are a punishment rather than a treat. So, when I read that John Frieda Collection's new Root Awakening collection utilized eucalyptus and peppermint oil as building block ingredients, I questioned whether I could get through the hair washing experience without my gag reflex kicking in. Lucky for me, the peppermint smell is light and refreshing — sure, as soon as you squeeze some shampoo onto your hand, you'll detect the scent, but it's not "curiously strong" (yes, it's an Altoids reference) or overpowering in any form. Instead, when blended with the other vital ingredients, the mint gives your scalp a vigorous, cooling tingling sensation. Plus, somehow, it will add a little pep to your step (chalk it up to aromatherapy, if you will). And that's just how you'll feel while in the shower.

After trying the Root Awakening Nourishing Moisture Shampoo and Conditioner, which were formulated for those of us with dry hair in need of some nutrients, I was floored. My hair felt softer and fuller — and even my ends (which are looking bogus these days because I'm overdue for a trim!) looked healthier. The John Frieda Root Awakening line also includes shampoo and conditioner options tailored to normal hair and breakage-prone hair.

Perhaps the greatest ingredient in the line, however, is the Root Awakening Health Boosting Detangling Spray— spray three to four pumps of this leave-in conditioner and you'll be able to comb your fingers through your hair with relative ease. Those of you who, like me, have dry hair and are tender-headed (I still cringe when I think of the hours I spent at the mercy of my mother's relentless comb as she tried to put my hair in a nice braid or make it otherwise presentable) will be particularly fond of this product. Best of all, it doesn't make your hair oily or goopy, nor does it weigh it down.

As it turns out, Root Awakening may just be the nicest awakening my hair has had in some time!

John Frieda Root Awakening Nourishing Moisture Shampoo and Conditioner, $6.49 each. John Frieda Root Awakening Health Boosting Detangling Spray, $6.49. Available at food, drug and mass retailers nationwide.

I am currently laughing at the fact that you hate anything to do with mint! These products sound fantastic, I always forget to pick them up at my local drug store. Cannot wait to try it! I feel like the refreshing mint smell will wake me up in the morning, and that is a plus.
