It's official: there's nothing quite as effective as retinol when it comes to reducing the signs of aging. Derived from vitamin A, retinol has been used in various lotions and creams throughout the years, to treat acne-prone skin (it helps to clear up clogged pores) and to banish fine lines and wrinkles (dermatologists have actually noted the results in clinical trials). At one point, however, retinol started coming under scrutiny which led to it virtually disappearing from most over-the-counter skincare products. Medical studies had shown that, when ingested orally, high doses of retinoids could lead to congenital deformities (hence why it's not advisable to consume any retinol-rich foods while pregnant) — this, of course, raised a red flag regarding the topical application of retinol and its potentially harmful effects. Thankfully, numerous studies have shown that the human system absorbs a practically untraceable amount of Retinol from the routine usage of skincare products containing the substance — and, furthermore that it carries no congenital or carcinogenic risks. Of course, some of this can be attributed to the advances made in the types of Retinoids used in these products. But the point is this: you can now fall in love with Retinol all over again, without it being some sadomasochistic affair.
DERMAdoctor's Poetry in Lotion won't just have you crushing hard — it will have you as caught up as a lovesick puppy. The skin rejuvenating lotion contains 1% Retinol, along with other ingredients like: plantago lanceolata, a Swiss Alp evergreen believed to boost collagen production; edelweiss extract, an Alpine flower extract rich in antioxidants; licorice extract, another powerful antioxidant; Indian frankincense to soothe irritated skin; St. John's Wart extract, which produces irritation-soothing flavinoids; meadowsweet flower extract, an herb known for its antiseptic benefits; and more.
If you apply Poetry in Lotion onto clean skin every other day, you'll start seeing results in as little as two weeks (I certainly did!). It's so effective, in fact, that you'll feel like you should have your own set of infomercial-ready "before" and "after" picks.
But, of course, because retinol is so potent, Poetry in Lotion shouldn't be used in a heavy-handed manner. It's advisable to begin using it every other day at bedtime and, if your skin tolerates it, then escalate to daily usage. A few small side effects I noticed: retinol makes you sensitive to light (part of the reason why you should always use an SPF lotion during the day time) and, depending on how much of a problem you have with that already, it can be a tad uncomfortable at first. Also, if you have sensitive skin, you may experience some irritation so, again, I would advise you to use with caution. That being said, I myself have sensitive skin and, while it took a minute to get used to the lotion's slight tingling sensation, it soon became second nature. And the results.. How can you argue with those results? This is such an enticing product that it really is like poetry!
