Teen Spirit: Dermalogica Clean Start Line

CSgroup

Over the past couple of years, boutique and high-end skincare lines have been releasing new collections that cater exclusively to the teen market, an expansive demographic that had been relatively untapped when it came to skin products.

The success of Gossip Girl (and the show’s power to catapult a brand into the coveted “it” status), the boom of networking sites like YouTube.com, Facebook.com, and MySpace.com, and the bewilderingly high box office figures for the High School Musical movie franchise all underscore the growth of a generation of teens and twenty-somethings that has real spending power, an interest in fashion and pop culture, and unlimited access to information (thanks, largely, to the Web). These teenyboppers want affordable but quality skincare products that cater to their specific needs — and boy, there are a lot of needs when it comes to teen skin! As those hormones kick in, the skin undergoes its own turbulent changes, which can often mean oily skin and a propensity for breakouts. And there’s nothing worse than being a teen with bad skin in the Heathers -like world known as high school so suffice it to say that most teens will go the extra mile (and spend the extra bucks) to ensure balanced and clear skin.

Dermalogica‘s new Clean Start line targets adolescent skin, unclogging pores and eliminating acne without using the harsh chemicals found in other anti-acne products (these chemicals can over dry the skin and eventually lead to more breakouts). The Clean Start line, which consists of eight products, contains no artificial fragrances or dyes, no mineral oils and no S.D. alcohol so as to minimize potential irritants. The packaging, meanwhile, is bold and colorful, so as to convey a youthful zest.

The eight products in the line are: Wash Off, a foaming facial cleanser containing salicylic acid to fight breakouts and bacteria,  oil-controlling botanical extracts, and energizing orange peel; All Over Clear, a toner containing oil-controlling sesame seed extract and soothing licorice, burdock and argan extracts, which you can spritz over your face when you need to control shine; Ready, Set, Scrub!, an exfoliating clay mask containing exfoliating Silica; Welcome Matte SPF15, a lightweight lotion with sunscreen protection; Brighten Up SPF 15, a shimmering, tinted moisturizer that makes your skin glow (without ever looking oily or greasy); Bedtime for Breakouts, a super-powered acne treatment meant for overnight use that treats breakouts with salicylic acid while keeping any potential redness at bay through the usage f cooling cucumber and soothing licorice extracts; Hit the Spot, a highly effective acne spot treatment containing benzoyl peroxide (which kills acne-causing bacteria with a dose of oxygen), soothing plant extracts and purifying zinc sulfate; and Smart Mouth Lip Shine, a lip moisturizer containing vitamin E, cocoa seed butter and shea butter.

Now, I had a trusty pair of very fashionable and persnickety teens try on these products, and the girls were over the moon — particularly over the Hit the Spot treatment, which they said zapped away pimples in a matter of hours, and the All Over Clear, which they said really kept their skin refreshed throughout the day. I myself tried the Hit the Spot treatment and was thrilled to see how effective it was (and unlike certain drugstore brands, it didn’t make my skin red or leave a dry patch).

So, whether you yourself have temperamental skin or you have a relative (daughter, little cousin, niece, etc.) who does, you can turn to Dermalogica’s Clean Start for a fresh start of your own.
