Spring 2009 Tokidoki for Onitsuka Tiger Collection
Last year, when Tokidoki and Onitsuka Tiger collaborated on their limited edition sneaker line, the emphasis was on hi-top shoes and traditional Tokidoki characters. This time around, the emphasis is on low-cut styles and on giving the art an added twist (more on that below).
The Tokidoki Lanwnship style pictured at top, which hit stores in February, features the same silhouette as the Onitsuka Tiger Lawnship style first released in 1974, which was designed to cater to the needs of tennis players on the court. It features Tokidoki's Japanese anime-inspired artwork along the lining and within the clear sole, plus the side of the heel features a small illustration of the orange-and-black Tokidoki Onitsuka Tiger character created exclusively for the two brands' collaborations (which has some pretty enormous teeth!).
The artwork along the interior and inside the translucent sole depicts the tiger character in various Olympic scenarios (a very cute idea, I must say). The bets part? The artwork glows in the dark so, when you switch the lights off, these trippy characters will still be doing the 'do (not only is this a cute design detail but I would imagine it's incredibly helpful when it's early in the morning and you simply can't find your shoes anywhere!). Another adorable detail is the star-shaped laceholder. The Lawnship is available in two colorways for women: white/apple green/pink and sky/ocean/yellow (the white/navy/red color pictured above is actually one of the two men's colors).
The second style pictured above is the Tokidoki Lunetta, a ballerina slipper style with a sportier edge and a tiny heel. This style features a tiny bow detail along the rounded toe (I actually love the rounded cut and stitching along the front, too, because it makes me think of point shoes!). There's also a larger bow on the heel, which laces up just like ballet shoes would. The Tokidoki artwork is featured along the lining and inside the translucent sole, plus there's a small flower detail along the toe to heighten the overall cute factor. The Lunetta style is available in April in nero/white, rose/white (pictured here) and bianco/coral.
Tokidoki for Onitsuka Tiger Lawnship, $125; Tokidoki for Onitsuka Tiger Lunetta, $115. Available at Nordstrom.com, as well as Sportie LA, Eilatan, Shoebiz, Bloomingdale's and Barneys stores.
