Close Your Summer Out With A Bang With These Great Beauty Buys
While Fall 2009 makeup collections are starting to hit counters this month (and we’ll, of course, be offering you the scoop on the best in show), the fact is the blazing heat is in full effect, and many of us aren’t exactly ready to trade in our summer dresses and shades for sweaters and pashminas. During the weeks ahead, we’ll be wanting to accentuate our sunkissed skin with pretty nude lipsticks, shimmery coral and mango-tinged glosses, sultry bronze and copper shadows and liners, and aquatic-inspired aqua, teal and turquoise shadow hues. So don’t feel pressed to rush and stock up on fall beauty goodies just yet — embrace the carpe diem spirit of summer and treasure every moment left.
Here, a look at some of the beauty buys (and the pretty makeup looks) you should try out before the season ends.
RETRO TEALS, PEARLY WHITES, AND LILACS
NYX Cosmetics “Hippie-Chic” Trio Eyeshadow, $8. Visit NYXCosmetics.com
I’m always so impressed with NYX Cosmetics’ eye shadows. Not only do the shadows have staying power, but the color range is beyond extensive. The funky shades in “Hippie-Chic” trio look like the type of hues Valerie Harper might have worn in Rhoda.
Here’s what these three shadows look like on the skin:
SHINE-TASTIC NUDE LIP GLOSS
Smashbox Untamed Lip Gloss in Flesh, $18. Visit Smashbox.com
Nothing brings out sunkissed skin like a pretty nude lip color. Smashbox’s Untamed Lip Gloss in Flesh (pictured above, at right) allows you to go for an understated natural look.
Check out how much sheen the lip gloss has:
SEDUCTIVE BRONZE SHADOW HUES
Eyes By Design Bronze Collection for Brown Eyes, $14.50. Available at HSN. Visit HSN.com for more information.
Eyes By Design’s shadow quads are designed for people with different eye colors, with each palette meant to accentuate their eyes. Brown-eyed girls (cue the Van Morrison song) can enjoy the four shades in the Bronze Collection, which range from a mauve-ish pink to a penny copper.
The shades look even prettier on the skin than they do in the palette (pictured from 1 at top to 4 at bottom):
ORANGE-TINGED LIP COLOR
Prescriptives Calyx Exhilarating Lip Gloss in Mango, $14.50, and Exhilarating Lipcolor in Papaya, $17.50. Visit Prescriptives.com
Most women can’t get away with tangerine and orange-tinged lip colors — that is, until the summer months roll around, their tans deepen, and the sun’s rays practically beckon us to experiment with bolder colors. For just a bit of sheen, add the Exhilarating Lip Gloss in Mango — while it looks extremely bright in its tube, it’s way more subtle on the skin (more like the inside of a peach), and it has a delicious guava taste. For a creamier look, opt for the Papaya Lipcolor (the bottom swatch in the below pic).
GOLD, BRONZE, AND TEAL EYE SHADOW COMBOS
Urban Decay “Get Baked” Palette, $28. Visit UrbanDecay.com
I tend to swoon over Urban Decay’s deliciously indulgent eye shadow hues, but the “Get Baked” palette really delivers a makeup high (get it?). The colors range from Twice Baked, an almost matte brown shade, to Half Baked, a sultry copper color, Flipside, a soft teal, and Baked a golden bronze hue. The set also comes with a 24/7 Eye Pencil in Bourbon, a brown shade with a bit of a wine undertone, and Urban Decay’s Shadow Primer Potion in Sin.
Everything about these shades screams summer. Just look:
FLUSHED CORAL CHEEKS
Tarte Cosmetics Eco-Cheek Natural Cheek Stain, $30. Visit TarteCosmetics.com
Unlike other cheek stains, Tarte’s Eco-Cheek isn’t the least bit greasy, and it adds a natural-looking coral shimmer to your cheekbones.
DELICATELY BRONZED SKIN
POP Beauty Double Duty Bronzer, $26. Visit PopBeauty.com
Holy mammoth bronzer! POP’s Double-Duty Bronzer is bigger than most coasters — which, of course, means more bang for your buck. The Bronzed Honey Beam duo includes two shades of golden bronze, which you can blend together or use separately depending on how deep a tan you’re hoping to embellish.
ILLUMINATING METALLIC EYE PENCILS
Smashbox Untamed Double-Ended Eye Brightener, $22. Visit Smashbox.com
There are days when you just want to perk up your eyes — without adding a thick liner or some intense eye shadow hues. Smashbox’s Untamed Souble-Ended Eye Brightener allows you to do precisely that. The jumbo pencil glides along your lids easily, and delivers a hint of color to open up those eyes and make them look bigger and brighter. Look at the subtle, almost imperceptible hues:
CLUB KID-PROOF GLITTER ACCENTS
NYX Cosmetics Glitter Cream Pallet in “Surreal,” $5. Visit NYXCosmetics.com
There’s a disco feel to these glitter creams that just makes me want to pull out some Saturday Night Fever moves. The creams look way more subtle on the skin than they do in the palettes (peep the photo below) but, of course, we’re talking about degrees of flashiness here. They remind me of the glittery shadows Sharon Stone wore in Casino — and hey, that’s a pretty cool pop culture reference right there.
