The soundtrack for Little Rooms' new Thornwall Collection (well, in my mind, anyway!): The Starship's "We Built This City," Nas' "New York State of Mind," Nick Gilders' "Hot Child In The City," Kate Voegele's "Manhattan From the Sky," the Red Hot Chili Peppers' "Under The Bridge," Vanessa Carlton's "Nolita Fairytale," Friendly Fires' Friendly Fires' "Paris, Fergie's "London Bridge," and Jay-Z's "Empire State of Mind."
You're getting the common thread tying all of these songs together, right? No matter the decade in which they were released, or the musical genre in which they were performed, these compositions all function as odes to various metropolis throughout the globe and the most noteworthy landmarks therein. All of these cuts pick up on the cosmopolitan sensibility of the new collection by Little Rooms, a jewelry line that never fails to impress with its bold, incredibly detailed, innovative designs.
There are the more literal cosmopolitan-based pieces, for example: the "Cities and Roads" bangle, pictured third from top, a square piece with rounded edges that features tall buildings jutting out of the sides, all connected by a winding strip of road; the "Cityscape" ring, pictured at bottom, which features a cluster of buildings of varying heights atop a flat surface; or the "Bridge Double Finger Ring," pictured at top, which features what look like yellow cabs stuck in traffic atop a draw bridge (perhaps the Brooklyn Bridge?). And then there are the pieces that focus on other elements of city life — starting with the music blaring out of car windows, wafting through festive neighborhoods, bumping at night clubs and fashion shows, and more. Take a look at the "Seismic Wave Earrings" pictured above, which could very well be graphical interpretations of radio signals, or admire the "Radio Dial Double Finger Ring," which captures both the city dwellers' reliance on technology and her desire to let the radio set the tune for her day.
The Thornwall collection blows me away on so many different levels. Not only do the pieces' motifs speak to the collection's theme, but their aesthetic is also consistent with what we've come to associate with metropolitan phenomena: towering, ambitious, intrepid, unapologetic, and charmingly bombastic. It's even telling that the collection includes a few double-finger rings, one of the fliest and edgiest looks adored by us city gals — and the fact that these rings feature urban landmarks makes them all the more beguiling since it feels like the world is literally at our fingertips.
This "hot child in the city" can definitely appreciate that!
