Current Beauty Obsessions: A Few Of My Favorite Things

Like most women, when I discover a great skincare product or stumble upon a flattering lipstick or a conversation-starting nail polish, I go through a honeymoon period with my new finds. Lately, I’m obsessing over the products and looks listed here. I’ll admit: there are many others, but these are this teacher’s pets!

1. Emerald Green Nail Polish

I realize the green nail trend is starting to ebb — especially as we move further into the holiday season and festive red polishes, as well as sparkling metallic shades, start to pop up on fingertips. But, then, the most stylish people know that, while trends are fleeting, style is forever — and these emerald green polishes have tons of style. The Zoya Matte Velvet Veruschka shade (pictured above and on nails below) works for the season since it makes you think of evergreen trees and gorgeous wreaths. Plus, the matte finish adds this edgy, unexpected twist. The Sally Hansen Insta-Dri nail polish in Jumpin’ Jade, meanwhile, makes your fingertips look like they were dipped in precious jewels — plus, the brush is extra wide, which means coating every nail is easy and quick, and the polish dries in 60 seconds.

Zoya Matte Velvet Nail Polish in Veruschka, $7; visit Zoya.com; and Sally Hansen Insta-Dri Jumpin’ Jade, $4.99; available at most mass food and drug retailers.

2. Korres Exfoliating Lip Scrub

Know when your lips start looking a little scaly and you’re tempted to pick at them but you know that will only make matters worse? Well, you can apply all the lip balms and hydrating lip glosses in the world but, sometimes, you just have to scrub that dull, dead skin right off. The Korres Lip Scrub features rice powder to naturally and gently exfoliate lips, while coconut flour, jojoba seed oil, and beeswax hydrate lips. All you do is apply the Lip Scrub in the same way you would lipstick, then rinse — the treatment leaves your lips looking extra smooth so that, when you do apply lip color, you’ll have a nice and even surface.

3. Clinique Deep Comfort Hand and Cuticle Cream

When I described Clinique’s Deep Comfort Body Butter in February’s Battle of the Moisturizers piece, I described the sensation of the rich cream on your skin as being akin to a bear hug. So how would I describe the new Deep Comfort Hand and Cuticle Cream? I’d say it feels like you’ve dipped your hands inside the softest, yummiest cashmere gloves (minus the warmth that accompanies this winter staple). The hand cream contains hydrating murumuru seed butter, soothing chamomile, and wheat germ, birch, and barley extract. I love how much hydration the cream delivers — all without leaving your hands greasy, sticky or balmy.

4. Colgate Wisp Mini-Brush

Colgate-wisp

Having endured some pretty horrific experiences at the dentist this year (including my very first and hopefully last root canal), I’m now practically a spokesperson for near-compulsive oral hygiene routines. In addition to flossing daily and brushing twice a day, I now carry a pack of Colgate Wisps with me at all times, These tiny disposable brushes are smaller than a stick of Chapstick and they come in three flavors (spearmint, peppermint and cinnamon). The toothpaste is already worked into the bristles of the brush and there’s no rinsing necessary — all you have to do is release a Colgate Wisp from its foil packaging, brush on your teeth, and toss when finished. How’s that for convenience?

Colgate Wisp, $2.49 for 4-pack and $7.99 for 16-pack. Available at mass food and drug retailers nationwide.

5. Flesh-Toned Lipstick

I’ve been playing with more dramatic eye makeup looks these days so, to balance it out, I’ve taken to accompanying these looks with nude lipstick. Smashbox’s Charming is more of a true beige, with tons of shimmer, while Lorac’s Nude Scene has peachy undertones and a creamier consistency.
