Saintly Style — AllSaints Makes Its Way Into The U.S.
Hot on the heels of TopShop‘s foray into the US, British fashion brand AllSaints is making a splash across the Atlantic. Not only does it have an online boutique catering to its US clientele,, but it also opened its first stand-alone store in Los Angeles (at 100 N. Robertson Blvd.) on Nov. 19th, with stores in Miami and New York currently in the works.
Like TopShop, AllSaints’ designs draw inspiration from rock ‘n’ roll culture, but the main difference between the two is that AllSaints is less of a trend-driven brand, and its palette (centered on hues like heather gray, black, charcoal, midnight blue, oatmeal, moss green, and ecru) is way darker and moodier. While you’ll find flashes of dark pink, coral, and red in TopShop’s designs (not to mention picaresque prints and patterns (from florals to zebra stripes, checkers, polka dots, and more), colorful sequin and bow details, and more body-hugging silhouettes, AllSaints nods to the edgier, more peripheral youth culture movements of the 1960s, with a vibe that emulates everything from The Rockers subculture to the aura of cool surrounding Marianna Faithfull (one of my personal icons) and Jane Birkin.
Take, for example, the signature asymmetrical Levlon dress (pictured third from top), which is available in two shades of black and a heather gray, and features a plunging cowl neck, a wrap-around construction with a waist tie, short flutter-like sleeves, and ruching along the skirt and back. At top, you’ll find a daintier, more traditionally “girly” piece, the Athomos top, a sleeveless 100% silk piece with an asymmetrical neckline, Grecian-esque draping, and scattered floral embellishments. Even with its picturesque floral details, the Athomos top has a slightly disheveled feel that adds a streetwise edge.
Even AllSaints’ accessories boast a harder edge —the Zette necklace, for instance, features intertwined chains, tonal metal-set stones, heart-shaped padlocks, and chain strands that dangle loosely like undone pieces of thread.
Hey, moderately priced fashions with a moody vibe? That’s pretty heavenly (and saintly) to me.
