Hourglass Cosmetics Prodigy Hydrating Lip Gloss — A Happy Hour
As a former Days Of Our Lives junkie (yes, I was all up in the evil Stefano’s business back in high school), I chuckled a little when I first heard of Hourglass Cosmetics because it instantly made me think of Days’ opening sequence, where the voiceover goes, “Like sands through the hourglass, so are the days of our lives.” Needless to say, there is absolutely no affiliation between the daytime soap opera and this edgy line of cosmetics (except, of course, in my loopy little brain). But back to the business of makeup.
I was recently introduced to Hourglass Cosmetics, a line of luxury cosmetics founded by Carisa Janes. If the name sounds familiar, it’s because Janes’ resume includes working as an assistant product developer for Urban Decay and doing consulting work for such brands as Sugar Cosmetics. After over a decade working in the beauty industry, Janes launched Hourglass Cosmetics in 2004 with the hopes of offering women high-quality products with skin nourishing properties. And, of course, she wanted the products to have a sleek and modern look that added to their appeal.
My first experience with the line, which just launched at Sephora stores last month, was with the Prodigy Hydrating Lip Gloss, a sheer, paraben-free and sulfate-free gloss featuring vitamin E to hydrate and soothe lips. The squeeze tube features a gunmetal-colored removable cap and matching metallic detailing along the perimeter of the rectangular shape, with a clear center panel revealing the gloss color inside and bearing the hourglass logo. I love how lightweight and thin the tube is — it fits inside the palm of your hand and is thinner along the sides than even the most state-of-the-art Blackberry. That thinness makes it easy to slip it into your jeans pocket without having the unseemly bulk created by, say, your ordinary gloss tube. I must, however, admit that I do miss having a brush or sponge tip applicator. Even though you can squeeze the gloss out and apply it straight onto the lips, not having a brush or sponge does make the application process a bit trickier. Still, it’s a small price to pay for great lip color.
In particular, I tried out the Opium lip gloss shade, a sheer rose copper hue. I not only loved the versatility of the shade, but I also appreciated the texture of the gloss since it delivers maximum shine without feeling the least bit sticky or gooey. Plus, it really did feel as softening on my lips as a coat of lip balm. Based on this experience, I’m definitely curious to try more Hourglass Cosmetics products. Check out the photos below!
