Living Proof Full Thickening Cream — The Proof Is In The Bottle!

Like most women, I struggle to keep my hair looking healthy, shiny, soft, and full of volume and bounce. As a curly-haired kid, I was never truly forced to grapple with limp or lifeless hair — that is, until I hit my late teens and early ’20s and started subjecting my tresses to all sorts of impetuous and harsh dye jobs, perms, and other ill-advised chemical treatments. By the time I hit my late ’20s, my hair had been ravaged — it was now dry and brittle and, thanks to a Shakira-inspired platinum blond dye job, I was shedding more than an Old English Sheepdog. It’s taken years of leave-in conditioners, intensive hair masks, oil treatments, and constant care to get my tresses back in fighting form. But even now, I long for the good old days when my hair was naturally voluminous, even when I blow dried it straight. And, when I think about all the women out there with really fine or limp hair, I can only imagine their frustration over the desire for a voluptuous mane.

But we can finally see over the rainbow, ladies, thanks to Living Proof (the company that brought us No Frizz, one of the most exciting, jumping jack-worthy hair product releases in recent history). Living Proof founders Ward Stegehoek, Jon Flint, and Mitch DeRosa enlisted the help of MIT researcher Dan Anderson (who has taken tremendous strides in stem cell research) and professor Bob Langer to create the technology in their new Full Thickening Cream. The product relies on a new Beta Amino Esters technology developed by these MIT brainiacs to give hair long-lasting volume and a soft, touchable texture.

Here’s how it works: Poly Beta Amino Ester-1 deposits a pattern of  “thickening points” along strands of hair that creates the illusion of thicker hair (not to mention more hair as a whole). Think of it as a stretched-out Slinky — you have a single unit (in this case, your hair), with points of cohesion (the curving along the coils), and airy spaces (created by the stretched out metal/plastic springs). When you stretch out that Slinky, you get height and bounce, plus it’s flexible so that you can readjust its shape and retain the desired volume.

To witness the effects, you have to apply the product to damp hair, avoiding the roots but starting close to them and working the product all the way to the ends. The cream is lightweight and soft so that it’s as easy to run through damp hair as a leave-in conditioner. Once you’ve applied to your entire mane, you should comb the hair thoroughly, making sure the product has been evenly distributed throughout the head. You can let the product air dry or, if you want a more precise look, you can blow dry, making sure to brush your hair in upwards and backwards.

I tried the Living Proof Full Thickening Cream several times and was pretty amazed with the results. I love how it adds height to the top of my hair and makes me feel like I’m rocking a modernized version of the coveted “Sauerkraut” hairstyle popularized by Brigitte Bardot. With Living Proof’s Full Thickening Cream, you can get hottie-worthy, bouncing-with-the-wind hair (think Morgan Fairchild, Farrah Fawcett, or Kathleen Turner in Body Heat) without using hairsprays, gels and mousses that leave your hair crunchy and stiff (what I call the Peggy Bundy effect).

Now, if you want to maximize the product’s effects, I suggest using a blow dryer to style hair and using only the bare minimum of finishing products (only a touch of glossing serum or anti-frizz cream). Also, keep in mind that, when you first finish drying your hair, you may sense a slightly tacky or stiff texture, but if you simply allow the product to set, you’ll notice that within about an hour, you’ll be able to run your fingers through your mane and marvel at its softness.
