Lauren Merkin Saunters Into Spring With Colored Zippers, Rainbow Snakeprints, And More!
Handbag designer Lauren Merkin‘s Spring 2010 collection captures the season’s chipper color palette, with pieces in hues like lush green, deep cerise pink, pale lilac, light peachy pink, and maize yellow. One of the design elements that brings cohesiveness to the collection is the multi-colored zipper trim Merkin utilizes on several of her handbag styles like the Lucy and Allie (pictured above first and second, respectively). Each and every single zipper tooth is painted so as to create a festive, Mardi Gras-ready effect. At first glance, the trim looks like a beaded pattern and, when you look up close and notice that Merkin utilized zippers to create the effect, it only adds to intensify your sense of awe. After all, it’s all in the details! I love how she utilized the zipper trim on both of the bags pictured here, but particularly on the Allie, since the detailing accentuates both the frame-like handle and the origami-esque folds that make the shape so elegant.
Rainbow snakeskin prints in mustard yellow, muted tangerine, faded red, dark turquoise-tinged blue, sunny yellow, and newsprint-esque black are also prominent throughout the collection, infusing it with an artsy, slightly Bohemian, downtown flair. The dominance of the sunny yellow hue in the print works perfectly for a spring collection since it gives it an added kick and zest. If you look at the entire collection, you’ll notice what a different effect the print has depending on the bag’s silhouette — with the Astrid, a slouchy, shoulder bag number, the rainbow serpent fabric adds to the laid-back chic vibe, while with the Diana (pictured third from top), the print adds an edgy fashionista layer to the otherwise prim and petite accessory.
Chain shoulder straps are yet another tool Merkin utilizes quite often in her Spring 2010 collection (just check out the Iris, pictured below). The straps range from skinny and serpentine to chunky and rope-like (as with the Tess bag).
All in all, Merkin’s Spring 2010 collection is perfectly on trend while being innovative in subtle and unexpected ways.
