Matisse’s Top Ten Beauty Must-Haves: The Jive Records Artist Shares Her Secrets
As we work to expand our network of Sicka Than Average ambassadors, we're tapping into the collective expertise of fashion and beauty insiders, people who have intimate knowledge of the biz and can share helpful insights with us. We recently caught up with Jive Records dance/pop artist Matisse, who was the face of John Frieda's Sheer Blonde ad campaign for many years (along with her twin sister).
While preparing for the release of her debut album later this year, Matisse (née Brit Smith) took some time out to share her beauty must-haves with STA readers. Read on — and don't forget to check out her electronica-laced single "Better Than Her," which is reminiscent of "Borderline" and "Lucky Star" era Madonna.
1. Fresh Brown Sugar Body Polish ($65 for 14.1 oz. at Sephora.com)
"I went to Switzerland to ski, and my skin got so dry that someone recommended I use Fresh’s body polish," says Matisse. "It works so well that you don’t even need moisturizer afterward. It's definitely a must-have for winter."
2. Chanel Chance Eau de Toilette ($65 for 1.7 oz. bottle at Sephora.com)
"I fell in love with this scent when I lived in London," says the former model. "I stopped using it when I left but, when I smelled it again, it brought back memories of London so I started using it again!"
3. Benefit Cosmetics Erase Paste ($26 at Sephora.com)
"After being in the studio for days, writing, recording, and sleeping on floors, Erase Paste is my go-to makeup saver," Matisse confesses. "It conceals the dark circles under your eyes when you’re tired. I actually also use it around my lips too because it creates a definitive line when I’m wearing red lipstick."
4. Burt's Bees Naturally Nourishing Milk & Honey Body Lotion ($10 for 8 fl. oz. bottle at BurtsBees.com
"When I was living in L.A., it was so warm that I needed a lightweight moisturizer. This one is super light and has a nice shimmer to it. My friend, whose skin is flawless, put me on to it."
5. Maybelline XXL Pro Volume Mascara ($8.99 at mass food and drug retailers)
"I've been going to so many events that, at one point, I got temporary lashes that lasted three months, but they ended up making my real lashes fall out! So when I took out the temporary lashes, I needed a mascara to help lengthen my natural lashes until they grew again. This one has worked the best."
6. MAC Cosmetics Lady Danger Lipstick ($14 at MACcosmetics.com)
"I like it because of the name — it gives me a sense of empowerment," confides Matisse. "I found it because I was doing a makeup test with a girl at MAC, and she tested it on me before the Young Hollywood Awards. It was the perfect matte red lipstick and, from that point on, my love affair began."
7. Pantene Pro-V Texturize Moussing Foam Wax ($5.99 at Drugstore.com and at mass food and drug retailers)
"When my twin sister left our group, Brit & Alex, I wanted to revamp my look and do something edgier, a little more rock ‘n roll," she recalls. "When Danilo was styling my hair, he recommended I use Pantene’s Texturize Hair products to give it a fuller look so it wouldn't look like I had a soccer mom cut."
8. L'Oreal Paris Glam Shine (only available in Europe)
"This is my favorite lip gloss! You can only get it in London so, whenever I'm there, I always stock up in all the different colors because I never know when I’ll be back to get more!"
9. myface.cosmetics Blingtone Single Eye Shadow in Black Ice (£9.78 each; available at Boots.com
"You can only get this eye shadow in England. It's a Blingtone shadow that has crushed pearls and is really shimmery and wet, so it stays on forever and doesn’t smear as the day goes on."
10. Lancôme Star Bronzer ($36.50 at Macys.com )
"When my sister and I were writing songs in Sweden with Jörgen Elofsson, I got so pale that I started using my sister's bronzer and stole it from her," says Matisse. "But she found out and took it back, so I had to buy my own. I like it because, usually, bronzers make my face look dirty, but this one makes it look sun-kissed."
