Iris Van Herpen x United Nude Collaboration — Synesthesia-Inspired Footwear
I can’t tell if the model wearing these shoes has freakishly thin ankles or whether they simply look minute because they’re engulfed by these hefty footwear styles. Normally, I wouldn’t even post any photos where a model is involved in any capacity (I’m not big on perpetuating the narrow-minded and often oppressive beauty ideals embraced by the fashion industry through their choice of models). But since these are the only pics available at this time, I couldn’t resist offering you a sneak peek. So what’s the story with these Gaga-licious platforms? They’re the lovechild of the latest collaboration between United Nude and designer Iris van Herpen.
The Dutch fashion designer has electrified fashion lovers with her avant-garde, wonderfully eccentric point-of-view. Each collection has featured gravity-defying, aerodynamic, theatrical designs — her “Fragile Futility” collection, for instance, included pieces such as a skin-tight, cleavage-baring, black leather mini dress with a voluminous skirt featuring undulating, wing-like layers constructed using brass rods, while her Fall/Winter 2010 “Syneshtesia” collection included futuristic pieces boasting three-dimensional shapes and a high level of reflectivity thanks to the designer’s intricate twisting, coiling, slicing, knotting and layering of metallic leather and fabric.
Van Herpen introduced the above-pictured platform booties, the centerpiece of her collaboration with United Nude, at her Autumn/Winter 2010 show during London Fashion Week. The collection explored the idea of synesthesia, the phenomenon whereby one sensory experience can trigger another (such as hearing a song and, in turn, thinking of a color), and it asked the question of what would happen if all the senses were titillated at once through various stimuli. With their cumbersome shape, exaggerated hidden platform, curved heel, and diagonally arranged, reflective twisted coil strip details, these shoes were the perfect addition to Van Herpen’s supersonic collection.
The limited edition shoes will be available soon, so get ready to give your toes a bit of technotronic flavor.
