SENSAI and Sensibility — SENSAI Cellular Performance Hydrachange Essence

If you stay on the cutting-edge of skincare ingredients, you’ve probably noticed “Hyaluronic Acid” listed in quite a few of your go-to products — or, perhaps, theirf ormulas claim to boost HA synthesis. But what exactly is Hylauronic Acid?

One of the chief components of the extracellular matrix, Hyaluronic Acid is an anionic, non-sulfated glycosaminoglycan and it’s a chief component in skin. Within the skin matrix, Hyaluronic Acid helps with functions such as tissue repair and cell proliferation. And, like collagen and elastin, its levels decrease as we age. Prolonged exposure to UVA and UVB rays can also lead skin cells to produce less Hyalouronic Acid. By creating products that promote HA synthesis and counteract possible HA degradation, skincare companies are hoping to give us the recipe for younger, smoother, more supple skin.

Kanebo International, the company behind SENSAI, has played a vital role in the discourse regarding HA. In 1998, Kanebo not only discovered the gene responsible for HA synthesis, but it determined that Koishimaru Silk (once exclusive to Japan’s imperial family) could boost production of HA within the skin, making it the only silk to accomplish this feat. Subsequent triumphs followed: in 2002, Kanebo found the gene responsible for HA synthesis in the epidermis, and in 2003, it discovered that Natural NAG and Beta Carotene could accelerate HA synthesis within the epidermis.

As discoveries have been made, Kanebo has developed new ingredients and technologies that better address women’s skincare needs. This spring, three new products were added to SENSAI’s Hydrachange Collection: the Hydrachance Essence, Hydrachange Cream and Hydrachange Mist. All three products are meant to deliver long-lasting hydration by going beyond the epidermis and  helping to activate the skin’s own irrigation system by triggering Hyaluronic Acid synthesis.

Out of the three new products, I’ve been lovin’ up the SENSAI Cellular Performance Hydrachange Essence, which has a milky consistency that’s somewhere between a serum and a moisturizer in terms of texture. When you sweep it over skin, it’s easily absorbed — to the point where you almost forget you moisturized because there’s absolutely no balminess, oiliness, or residue of any sort. And yet its effects speak for themselves. While we’re taught to pile on toners, boosters, serums and moisturizers, the SENSAI Hydrachange Essence speaks to how much can be accomplished with just one star product that covers all the preliminary bases. Talk about streamlining your skincare routine! Key word for the day: efficiency.

The SENSAI Hydrachange Essence features three of the newest technologies in the Hydrachange series: SENSAI’s proprietary Splashing Formula, which consists of Hyaluronic Acid molecules of three different sizes which work in unison to smooth out wrinkles, moisturize the skin, and promote continuous hydration; the HA Supporting Network, a secondary player to SENSAI’s Hydrachange Complex (more on that later) that creates a water-sealing veil that coats the skin and allows for easier absorption of the Hydrachange Complex and other HA-boosting ingredients; and the Aqua Floral Fragrance Auto Penetrating Formulation Mist, which boosts HA production in the dermis and creates a pleasant, relaxing effect thanks to its plum blossom, sandalwood, rose and jasmine notes.

These three new technologies, then, work in unison with the core ingredients in the entire Hydrachange series. First, there’s the Hydrachange Complex, which contains Natural NAG (a marine monosaccharide), Beta-carotene, and a proprietary Hyaluronate/Collagen Booster. Together, these ingredients boost HA synthesis, enhance collagen quality, and give the skin a firmer appearance. Next, there’s the Micro Hyaluronic Acid, a special form of HA with a microscopic molecular structure that allows for greater penetration in high-density surfaces. Last, there’s Koishimaru Silk Extract, which retains 300% of its volume in water and can therefore boost the skin’s own moisture retention properties.

See? SENSAI just makes sense!
