Anna Sheffield Talisman Claw Diamond & Sapphire Necklace — Exclusively on Ahalife

Anna-sheffield-ahalife-necklace

Anna-sheffield-ahalife-pendant

Turns out I now have two fantasies involving wolves: the first involves the True Blood werewolf Alcide (no details necessary there!), and the second pertains to the Anna Sheffield Claw Talisman Necklace pictured above. Sheffield's La Chasse collection incorporates claw necklaces in 14k gold with pave champagne diamonds and in sterling silver and yellow gold with pave champagne diamonds, but this particular iteration, featuring a sterling silver and yellow gold shape adorned with yellow sapphire and diamond stones, is exclusive to AHAlife.com.

The pendant consists of a sterling silver upturned arch with a 14k yellow gold ride and, along its interior, rounded yellow sapphire stones that gradually lighten in color and decrease in diameter, leading to a trail of champagne pave diamond stones at the tip of the claw shape. This Claw Talisman Necklace was inspired by a wolf claw that Sheffield herself found and cast in silver, approaching it as a good luck charm she could wear around her neck. The claw inspired her La Chasse collection, which explores the relationship between the predator and its prey, between the hunter and the hunted, hence shifting the focus to the elusive, chase aspect of the experience.

Wear it around your neck and watch how many people try to sink their claws into it — well, metaphorically speaking, that is!

Green Room Thursdays — Juicy Couture’s Choose Green Collection

Juicy-Couture-Choose-Green-Collection

Juicy-Couture-Choose-Green-canvas

Seeing red is so five years ago — in 2010, it's all about seeing green. That's why, for Fall 2010, Juicy Couture is quite literally offering customers a more eco-friendly point-of-view with its "Choose Green" collection of sunglasses. Each of the frames in the three-style collection was manufactured using a bio-plastic derived from castor beans (as opposed to the traditional petroleum-based plastics) and includes bamboo, a plentiful and renewable source, along the temple and/or arms.

The Choose Green collection consists of these styles: "Jasmine" (pictured above in Raspberry Pink), with its squared oval frames, which are made entirely of bio-plastic and are adorned with the Juicy Couture stamp logo in bamboo along the temples; "Fern" (pictured above in Tortoise), which boasts a streamlined, rectangular shape and features the Juicy Couture logo in a Gothic lettering style on a bamboo treatment along the temples; and "Peony" (pictured above at center, in Tortoise), a hipster-ready, demure cat-eye frame with bio-plastic along the front and bamboo along the arms (the temple of which features the Juicy Couture logo in a small, unobtrusive font).

All of the shades in the Choose Green collection are packaged in an organic canvas pouch printed with soy ink featuring a whimsical, slightly retro, cloud-like pattern with the words "Seeing Green" in big block letters juxtaposed above these pastel-colored swirls. A hangtag printed on recycled paper and featuring the words "Choose Green" is attached to each pouch via a moss-colored strand of thread.

Below, you'll find more photos of the "Peony," our favorite style in the Choose Green collection, along with credit details for all of these! Ready to green your gaze?

A Tribe Called Fashion Quest — A Global Approach To Style

Alex-and-ani-zuni-charm-bracelet

Bing Bang Zuni Charm Bracelet, $57.80. Available at BingBangNYC.com

This season, fashion and jewelry designers are functioning as tour guides, leading us through a journey spanning the entire globe. First stop: a safari through Kenya and Tanzania. To reference the wild, exotic  animals in these destinations, they've offered us an array of booties, blazers, dresses, scarves, hats and cuffs with zebra stripes, cheetah and leopard spots, and panther silhouettes.

Next, they're guiding us through Ghana, threading colorful glass beads like those found in Odumase Krabe through metal chains to create stunning statement necklaces and hand-sewing them onto purses, belts, and hemlines. Our final destination in Africa: Egypt, where we'll experience the grandness of the pyramids and reference ancient hieroglyphics via elaborate trangular shapes.

After our voyage through Africa, we're embarking on a visual trip to Sri Lanka and India. And, while we might not be physically staring at snake charmers on city sidewalks, we can be enticed by the handbags and jewelry pieces featuring undulating snakes matched with raw stones — all rife with mystery. Then, we're heading to Tibet, where we'll walk devoutly into Buddhist temples via the incorporation of prayer beads and age-old amulets in jewelry designs.

Lastly, we're venturing to South America, visiting the Quechua people in Peru and Bolivia, and then heading to Mexico to learn about Aztec-inspired textiles and patterns.

Below, you'll find some of our favorite "stops" on this worldwide journey — studded leopard print heels, purple handbags adorned with exotic snakeskins and lush ostrich feathers, and cuffs engraved with elegant cheetahs in mid-stride, among many other tribal-flavored wares. No passport necessary for this global quest!

New WEN By Chaz Dean Pomegranate Cleansing Conditioner

Chaz-dean-display

"Feel it!" he urged excitedly, lowering his head so that his gaze was directed to the red carpeting at his feet. Stretching his neck to narrow the gap between us, he beckoned me again. "Go ahead. Touch it!!"

I stepped forward trepidatiously, unfurling my fingers and fanning them out, my elbow unfolding and my arm inching towards him dubiously. Fully expecting him to change his mind or jerk his head back in horror, I hesitated before continuing to reach upward. Perhaps it was an involuntary response, the result of years of conditioning: after all, for us women of color, the hair-touching issue is more than a bit delicate, the unwritten rule being that such behavior is generally unwelcome (except, of course, when in the bedroom with a male conquest or in the salon with our stylist or colorist). After a beat, I continued raising my arm toward the top of his head until, at last, my fingertips grazed his choppy mane.

Before I knew it, I was combing through his feathery soft hair and practically twirling it around my fingers. Whie doing so, I blurted out in disbelief, "How is your hair this soft? It's like a Gund toy!"

"A what?" he asked, in between peels of laughter.

"You know, one of those stuffed animals. I could just cuddle with your hair and, like, fall asleep on it."

"So you wanna take a nap in my hair?" he said, laughing at the ludicrousness of it all. "You're funny"

This was how I, however unintentionally, broke the ice with celebrity stylist Chaz Dean when we met at the Q Shop, QVC's pop-up store in Rockefeller Center, during New York Fashion Week. A QVC regular, Dean was on hand to greet shoppers and celebrate the unveiling of his new WEN by Chaz Dean Pomegranate Cleansing Conditioner, which is set to launch on QVC on Monday, October 11th.

Fresh Soy Face Serum — A Real Soy Joy

Fresh-soy-face-serum

Ten years ago, soy emerged as the ingredient du jour in skincare products aimed at improving elasticity, softening skin, and brightening the complexion. Fresh co-founders Lev Glazman and Alina Roytberg pioneered the soy-loving cosmeceutical movement, incorporating soy in their haircare and skincare products as early as 1999. By 2002, Aveeno had followed suit with its Skin Brightening Daily Moisturizer (which was later reinvented and transformed into part of the brand's Positively Radiant line). In 2008, Origins, too, started favoring soy as an anti-aging and softening ingredient, making it a vital component of its Origins Organic skincare line.

Why soy? Well, the isoflavones in soy boast antioxidant properties similar to those found in vitamin E and can help to prevent photo-aging. Hydrolyzed soy proteins also help to stimulate collagen production, improving elasticity and hence making it a great anti-aging agent. The amino acids in soy—among them, threonine, valine, methionine, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, phenylalanine and tryptophane—also help to increase the production of collagen, elastin and keratin.

Of course, in the decade since soy emerged as a buzz word in healthy eating circles, some controversy has arisen regarding its dietary benefits — particularly after some medical studies surfaced suggesting that, when consumed in large quantities, soy's estrogen-like substances could heighten the risk of developing breast cancer. But before you join the anti-soy crusade, here are two things to consider: first, that the jury is still out on the subject; and second, that, the topical use of soy does not produce any hormonal side effects. In other words, don't go banishing soy-based skincare products from your bathroom cabinet just yet — especially before you try the new Fresh Soy Face Serum, the latest addition to Fresh's best-selling, consumer-approved soy skincare line!

The Fresh Soy Face Serum features a lightweight, slightly creamy consistency (think of a watery mayo texture or even a Caesar dressing feel). When you first apply it, skin will feel a bit balmy but, within 10-15 minutes, the serum will be fully absorbed by your skin and you'll notice it feels smoother and softer thanks to its hydrating and nourishing properties. In addition to soy proteins the Soy Face Serum features natural ingredients like: hibiscus peptides and anise extract, which are said to reduce the contraction of the facial muscles that lead to expression lines (but not to worry —these won't have a Botox-esque, face-freezing effect); cucumber extract, which soothes skin; evening primrose root extract, an anti-inflammatory that helps to reduce redness; rose flower water, which tones skin; moisturizing, fatty acid-rich jojoba seed oil and sunflower seed oil; and antioxidant-rich, emollient grape seed oil.

The product promises to hydrate and soften skin, help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, brighten skin tone, and improve elasticity within 4-6 weeks of consistent, twice-daily use. My experience: I did notice that skin felt softer and more hydrated and that, overall, the texture of my skin seemed to improve. In terms of the serum's brightening effects, I didn't see quite as dramatic an improvement. Sure, skin had a nice healthy glow, but any pesky dark spots remained well past the 4-week mark. If brighter skin is your main concern, I'd suggest investing in a line specifically developed for this feat (such as the Clinique Even Better range or the Clarins Brightening range). The major issue for me was the smell, which was far from savor (I built a resistance to it after an adjustment period of about 1-2 weeks, but I still think it's an odd, almost rancid scent). Still, I did appreciate the end results: mainly a healthier,  smoother, more supple complexion.

Fresh Soy Face Serum, $45. Available at Fresh.com and Sephora.com
