Our A-Z Guide To Fashion’s Night Out In NYC

On September 10th, on the eve of the launch of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2011, New York City will be bustling and vibrating with even more energy than usual, as boutiques, pop-up shops, and department stores extend their hours and hold exciting events that cater to the people who keep the  fashion and beauty industries alive: the customers themselves. With hundreds of events to choose from, Fashion’s Night Out feels like a “shop crawl” (think of a massive bar crawl minus the drunken stupor and with way more clothing involved). It’s an absolute blast but, with only 4-5 hours in which to pack so many activities, it does require some clever planning.

Most places offer complimentary appetizers and cocktails, as well as special discounts and free-gifts-with-purchase offers, but others involve everything from karaoke to tarot readings, complimentary makeovers, raffles, celebrity appearances, and opportunities to win tickets to NYFW runway shows.

Below, you’ll find a guide to the FNO events that have us in a tailspin. Check them out, share in our excitement, and make sure to visit FashionsNightOut.com for a complete list of happenings!

Enter the Alice + Olivia Model Search

Alice + Olivia founder and designer Stacey Bendet (pictured above) knows how to throw a party. For the second year in a row, she will once again be hosting and judging the Alice + Olivia Top Model contest alongside Cheri Bowen of the Marilyn Agency. If you’ve always dreamt of working the catwalk, this is your chance! Stop by the Bryant Park store between 5 p.m. and 7: 30 p.m. and have your photo taken by the professional photographer on site. Three finalists will then be chosen and asked to return to the A + O store between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. for a fitting with A + O garments.

The winner of the model search will be announced on September 11th via Alice + Olivia Facebook and Twitter pages (@alice_olivia). This lucky gal will be invited to appear in the Alice + Olivia Spring 2011 runway show and will receive a free consultation with a Marilyn modeling agent. Work it, gals!

Stop by Vanderbilt Hall at Grand Central from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. and meet Indian jewelry designer Amrita Singh, the mastermind behind the elaborate cabochon bib necklace pictured above.  Shop her designs in the “Fashion’s Central” pop-up store and take a moment to ask her about her work and inspirations.

Online fashion retailer ASOS.com and Teen Vogue are shutting it down for FNO — literally. The two entities have joined forces to host a block party on Bleecker Street, between Perry and West 4th Strret, wit events ranging from a joint fashion show, to a performance by VV Brown and impromptu giveaways.

By now, the makeup artists who entered the competition have handed in their face charts, outlining the looks they’ve conceptualized. Five finalists will be selected prior to FNO and invited to recreate their submitted looks on live models. The panel of judges will then examine the models and choose their favorite look. The artist crowned the winner, will receive a mentoring lunch with Trish McEvoy, a $1,000 Bergdorf Goodman gift card, and an array of Trish McEvoy tools and brushes.
