Mulberry for Target Collection — Is It Packin’ Heat?
On Saturday, October 10th, the Mulberry for Target collection hit stores, igniting such a frenzy among consumers that, rumor has it, the Target.com website was struggling to keep up with the increased traffic. Some handbag styles sold out within hours (though many can still be fond at select Target stores if you use the handy store locator feature on the site). Why the chaos? Well, fans of the British handbag brand’s classic styles could now nab more affordable versions at Target for prices ranging from $15 to $50.
While the best-selling Mulberry Alexa handbag (named after Alexa Chung) typically sells for $1250, the Mulberry for Target Large Satchel is priced at a moderate $50. Like the pricier version, the satchel features two belt straps with buckle closures along the front, a detachable shoulder strap, a sturdy top handle, and a postman lock closure. But, to keep the price points down, designers had to bypass the soft buffalo leather and sparkle tweed leather in favor of hot pink, leopard print PVC; a quilted, denim-colored cotton; a black quilted nylon given a velvet-like texture; and a glossy, patent leather-esque, black PVC.
Based on the advertisements, I was initially smitten with the cerise leopard satchel but, upon closer inspection, the handbag looks rather cheap (and I don’t mean affordable) and juvenile — think Betseyville meets Forever 21. Really, all the PVC styles (including the crossbody bags, which take a cue from the Lily clutch in Mulberry’s upscale collection) feel a bit garish. The Mulberry Denim Satchel and Mini Denim Crossbody, however, manage to exude the effortless elegance associated with the Mulberry brand at a fraction of the cost. Those, then, ger my vote for “best in class”
Mulberry Large Cerise Leopard Satchel, $49.99; Mulberry Denim Satchel, $34.99, and Mulberry Mini Denim Crossbody, $14.99; Mulberry Cerise Leopard Crossbody, $29.99, and Mulberry Black Patent Crossbody, $29.99. All available at Target stores and Target.com
