In recent years, talk of healthy hair has centered on the benefits of antioxidant-rich superfruits and the importance of paraben- and sulfate-free formulas. But, in reality, there’s many more factors to consider — among them how to keep hair’s pH level balanced. One of the goals of the Joico Silk Result hair care line, then, is to soften and hydrate hair, tame frizz, and polish tresses by keeping your hair’s pH level at its ideal level.

Now, before we get into the benefits of the Joico Silk Result line, then, let’s break down how the pH scale works and how hair factors into it.

The pH scale measures the ratio of hydroxide ions to hydrogen ions, and it ranges from 0 to 14, the former number classifying the most acidic materials and the latter figure denoting the most alkaline of substances. A single step up or down on this logarithmic pH scale accounts for a tenfold increase or decrease in alkalinity or acidity. Water, for example, is a neutral substance and hence has a pH level of 7 — anything below this figure is considered acidic and, anything above it, is deemed basic. In an aqueous solution, human hair has a pH of 4.5 to 5.

When you use a shampoo or conditioner, then, you should opt for a slightly acidic one — more specifically, one with a pH level close to that naturally found in hair (so, optimally, with a pH of about 5). Water is just alkaline enough to open the hair cuticle, so a slightly acidic shampoo is needed to counteract these effects and close the hair cuticle so that moisture will be retained and hair will remain smooth, flexible, and soft. An overly alkaline solution (like most hair dyes or perm products, for example) can severely damage your tresses, while overly acidic substances can burn your scalp.

The Joico Silk Result shampoo and conditioner have a pH level of 4.5 to 5.5 to keep your hair at its healthiest.

But that’s not all. The Silk Result formula features moisturizing and softening shea butter and hydrolyzed hair keratin (the latter is meant to mimic the hair’s natural keratin), as well as Joico’s revolutionary Synergistic Silk System, a trio of weightless silk amino acids, silk silicone, and a naturally-derived silk surfactant, all of which are formulated to bind with the keratin in hair strands, thereby creating a protective layer that seals in moisture, adds luster to strands, and keeps the hair cuticle smooth by locking out humidity.

The Joico Silk Result Shampoo successfully removes dirt and grime without stripping the hair and scalp of their essential natural oils. I have rather dry hair, and I often find that shampooing can further dehydrate strands, making it nearly impossible to work my fingers through my tangled and unruly mane. But with the Joico Silk Result Shampoo, hair feels clean but soft, so that I can easily comb fingers through hair.

The Joico Silk Result Conditioner, meanwhile, feels like a little bit of heaven. You can smell the creamy shea in the formula as soon as you apply it to your wet strands. Plus, as soon as you leave the shower, you’ll notice your mane feels detangled and smooth. The results are even more visible when hair dries — your mane will feel softer than a stack of towels treated with Downy, fluffier than the insides of your goose down pillow, and the effects will last for hours. I’ve washed my hair, slept on it, and then woken up to find my mane as silky, bouncy, and manageable as it was prior to my repose. How can you beat that?
