New Casio Baby-G x Married To The Mob Watch Is Pretty In Pink
On the heels of last year's bright, fun-loving, 1980s-flavored watch collaboration with streetwear brand Hellz Bellz (one of the two designs included a checkered yellow-and-black strap that paid homage to New York City cabs), Casio Baby-G is unveiling its latest co-branded timepiece, this time the result of an alliance with another pioneering brand in urban style: Married to the Mob.
Hitting stores next month, the Casio Baby-G x Married to the Mob watch showcases designer Leah McSweeney's knack for creating pieces that evoke a certain toughness without losing their feminine touch. MCSweeney, then, began by selecting a metallic blush pink color for the strap that would make Molly Ringwald's Andie Howell alter ego beam excitedly. But in typical MTTM fashion, she subverted the pink-is-for-princess paradigm by emblazoning the strap with her line's signature lip print logos, electing silvery lilac and light mauve-ish pink tones to seal the deal with a kiss. By overlapping the lip prints along the strap, McSweeney converted the saccharine model into one worthy of a femme fatale.
Though not quite as in-your-face as the Baby-G x Hellz Bellz pieces, the Baby-G x Married to the Mob watch does successfully capture a city girl's bravado, her resistance to abide by any pre-determined gender roles in life and in fashion.
The limited-edition watch (officially dubbed the BG5600MOB-4) includes such handy features for the rigors of urban living as: shock resistance, water resistance up to 100 meters, an LED backlight, a world time function that encompasses 48 cities, a 1/100 second stopwatch, a countdown timer, four daily alarms, and one snooze alarm ('cause, hey, what ambitious, multi-tasking, city-stomping girl doesn't need that extra five minutes of shut-eye?).
The Casio Baby-G x Married to the MOB watch will retail for $99 and will be available at select Nordstrom, Bloomingdales and Macy’s stores starting in May. For more details, visit Baby-G.com.
