Eugenia Kim Sample Sale In NYC From June 21-24
The Queen of Hat Lover Hearts, top-notch topper designer Eugenia Kim, is hosting her annual Summer Sale in New York City this week. Yesterday, I dropped by the Eugenia Kim showroom to preview the sample sale, which kicks off today — and you’ll be happy to discover that the main event is just as exciting as the trailer. Most of the pieces on sale are from the new Spring/Summer 2011 collection — and, while you might find some of the styles available online, others are so brand spankin’ new that they haven’t even made their e-commerce debut yet.
Though there are three bargain bins with floppy sun hats, simple crochet cowboy hats, and basic straw numbers priced at $5, $10 or $20, the real treasures (at least in the hat realm) are lining the walls of the showroom. The prices on these pieces range from about $75 to $175.
Some of my favorites include the fedora pictured at top, a golden brown number with a rust-colored scarf trim that reminds me of a sunset sky seen from the deck of a sailboat. I was beyond smitten with the Max 2 fedora (pictured second from top), an off-white natural hemp and toyo fedora with an aqua feather band with brushed gold leaf detail. Normally priced at $325, this gorgeous piece is now going for $175. Another fantastic fedora buy: the Craig (pictured fourth from top), a two-toned, natural hemp and camel toyo fedora with a hand-ruched, brown-and-cream ikat silk band that infuses the piece with a safari feel.
If you prefer slouchier silhouettes, you’ll likely love the Gary 4 (pictured second from top), a newsboy cap fabricated using a breathable toyo material. The cap features navy-and-white stripes and a slim, navy-colored brim, adorned with a ribbon-like, gold-toned mesh trim with buttons on either end for a true “anchors away” feel. Regularly priced at $210, the Gary 4 is now going for $75. Another great laid-back choice is the Gary 1 newsboy (pictured below, after the jump), a camel brown toyo cap with small vents that make it summer-appropriate and with a chocolate brown, distressed calf leather band.
Aside from the fedoras and newsboys, you’ll love the sunhats available, which include oversize designs like the tangerine number pictured above, which features white and orange stripes along its dome, a braided ribbon trim for a dose of resort charm, and a sculptural brim that curves perfectly to create a sense of movement. Other sunhats (some of which are pictured below) feature silk scarf trims that can be tied under the chin or at the base of the neck for greater security from strong ocean breezes.
At the center of the showroom, you’ll find two tables lined with hair accessories like the Eden 2 and Eden 3 headbands, both of which feature hand-placed feathers in either a silvery gray color or a golden oatmeal shade. Usually priced at $210, these fanciful headbands are now going for $55. Other standouts include double metal chain headbands, like the Chelsea 4, with chiffon strips woven through their thick links. An elastic band at the end of these gold chain headbands ensures a cozy fit, so that you can keep your hair back in ultimate style. Most of these chain headbands are priced at $20 (from $99).
Silk chiffon headbands with coquettish bows like the Serena 5, a leopard-print number, and the Serena 6, a navy piece with white polka dots, will likely catch your eye. Priced at $35 (from $88), these headbands will have you feeling like the cutest present — already wrapped in an adorable bow.
After the jump, you’ll find more photos of the various hat styles, head scarves, headbands, and barrettes available, so read on!
