Get The 4 Sally Hansen Nail Looks In Prabal Gurung’s “New Thing” Resort 2012 Video Starring Rye Rye
In February, when designers were showing their Fall 2011 collections in Lincoln Center during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York City, few managed to conjure up the type of excitement and awe beckoned by Prabal Gurung’s Fall 2011 collection, whose pieces fused together two unlikely inspiration Great Expectations‘ Miss Havisham character and fashionable Brooklyn girls in formal wear. Relying on his “mixed media” approach, Gurung created such sensational pieces as a fitted, dip-dyed fox coat with horizontal panels that boasted a white-to-blood-orange ombré effect; fluid, floor-length, chiffon skirts in rich crimson and demure black; a retro ivory dress with 3/4-length sleeves and a below-the-knee pencil skirt with a hand-painted black lace motif creating an unexpected optical illusion; and a slightly rumpled deep crimson party frock with a bell-shaped skirt, a belted waist, and off-the-shoulder sleeves. Rarely do great expectations beget great satisfaction, but Gurung managed to accomplish just this feat. No wonder he nabbed the Swarovski Award for Womenswear at the CFDA Awards in June!
To showcase some of his Resort 2012 pieces in a dynamic manner, Gurung decided to collaborate with M.I.A protégé Rye Rye on a fashion/music video, with the Baltimore-bred rapper wearing his pieces while rapping, dancing, and singing in the clip. Known for her playful rhymes, adventurous fashion sense, and dynamic stage presence, Rye Rye marches to the beat of her own drum — much like Gurung himself — making for a perfect match. In the Rye Rye “New Thing” video for Prabal Gurung, Rye Rye manages to channel the energy and penchant for flash that we’ve come to associate with Gurung, cheekily spitting lyrics like, “I ain’t Willow but I’ll show you how to whip it,” and dancing, bouncing, and twirling playfully while chanting the on-the-nose “We ain’t the same thing ’cause I’m the new thing” chorus.
To complement the looks shown in the Resort 2012 video, Prabal Gurung also collaborated with Sally Hansen to create four unique nail looks. When sporting a sleeveless, slightly retro, black shift dress with yellow, honeysuckle, white, and orange floral motifs, Rye Rye wears the Sally Hansen Hard as Nails Xtreme Wear nail lacquer in Sun Kissed ($2.99 at mass food and drug retailers and at Drugstore.com), a creamy orange shade. Seconds later, while flailing her arms about in a long-sleeved, button-down shirt with vertical black accent stripes along the center panels and a bright fuchsia and black floral print, Rye Rye’s nails are coated with the Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure lacquer in Gilty Pleasure ($6.99 at mass food and drug retailers and online stores like Ulta.com). An adorable, sleeveless black top with oversize mint green polka dots and a green bib-like panel at the rounded neckline, paired with a flouncy white skirt with black polka dots, is jazzed up with the Sally Hansen Hard As Nails Xtreme Wear lacquer in Pacific Blue ($2.99 at mass food and drug retailers like Drugstore.com), a creamy, electric cobalt blue shade. And, for the most dramatic piece, a sequined red-and-black evening dress with 3/4-length sleeves and a neckline that reveals the collarbone area, Rye Rye’s nails are coated with the glossy, jet black Sally Hansen Hard As Nails Xtreme Wear in Black Out ($2.99 at mass food and drug retailers like Drugstore.com), which is then covered with the Sally Hansen Crackle Overcoat in Antiqued Gold ($5.95 at mass food and drug retailers), a light, vintage-looking, sparkling gold color that shatters on the nail plate creating cracks and rivulets on the nail plate.
After, the jump, you’ll find close-ups of all the nail lacquers shown in the Prabal Gurung Resort 2012 video, along with recreations of the looks shown in the clip!

4. Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure Polish in Gilty Pleasure
This metallic light gold shade has brassy undertones that give it a bit of a tarnished feel, as if the color had been plucked from an antique artifact. It’s the most understated color of the bunch, but it’s still full of sheen and sophistication. Check it out:
