Roarin’ for Rara Avis, Iris Apfel’s New Jewelry Line for HSN
In Latin, the phrase "rara avis" denotes a rare bird. In fashion circles, the term has also been used when referencing Astoria, Queens-bred fashion icon and jewelry designer Iris Apfel — in fact, in 2005, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York unveiled a fashion exhibit inspired by the eclectic personality's personal style titled Rara Avis: The Irreverent Iris Apfel. Unlike more trepidatious style icons whose every ensemble feels carefully premeditated and calculated and who constantly fret about "taste levels (pan to a shot of Nina Garcia chastising a Project Runway contestant), Iris Apfel became a style icon by approaching fashion as a fun experiment, tossing away any rule books; whimsically mixing paisley, floral, brocade, and striped motifs; piling on beaded necklaces in vibrant colors; draping herself in furs; and donning quirky, oversize glasses. Combining haute couture fashions with flea market finds, vintage baubles, and DIY projects involving found objects turned into wearable art, Apfel has embraced a kooky but delightful aesthetic.
Now 90 years old, the self-proclaimed "geriatric starlet" has launched a new jewelry line available exclusively at HSN. The Rara Avis by Iris Apfel collection taps into Apfel's adventurous approach to dressing: zesty colors like yellow, turquoise and red abound; as do chunky pieces like chain necklaces made of translucent resin; and wildlife motifs are peppered throughout the collection via zebra prints, owl-shaped pendants, and snake-like forms.
One of the most striking pieces in the collection is the Rara Avis by Iris Apfel "Snake Charmer" Multi-Stone Cuff Bracelet ($49.95 at HSN.com), an antiqued, bronze-toned hinge bracelet shaped like an undulating snake with a rounded head and a curved tail. Covered with bezel-set clear round stones, the bracelet measures 6 1/2" in length and 1 5/8" in width so that it looks like it's slithering atop the wrist.
If you've always been fascinated with Apfel's deftness for layering oversize necklaces, you might be drawn to the Rara Avis by Iris Apfel "Jungle Joy" Necklace ($49.95 at HSN.com), which features resin, oval-shaped curb links in either zebra or leopard print. Measuring 37 1/2" in length, the "Jungle Joy" necklace covers most of the torso for a truly savagely salacious statement.
Tribal and ethnic tones resound in the collection, as with the Thailand-esque feel of the Rara Avis by Iris Apfel "China Stacks" Three-Piece Carved Bangle Bracelets ($34.95 at HSN.com), a funky set featuring one bracelet measuring 1" in width, a second bracelet measuring 1 3/8" in width, and a third piece measuring 1 7/16" in width. Each acrylic bangle looks like it's made of wood, with floral carvings all along their perimeter.
For a pop starlet-worthy confectionery style treat, check out the Rara Avis by Iris Apfel "Roll and Rock Candy" Geometric Bead Stretch Bracelet ($39.95 at HSN.com), which features three rows of clustered conical beads in clear, olive, blue, or red for an instant celebratory jolt to any ensemble.
