Whether you associate Sperry Top-Sider with boardwalk excursions, regatta season, boarding school students, posh pool parties, or country club settings, there’s no denying that the brand’s nautical shoes are synonymous with straight-laced, conservative, classic style — in fact, their boat shoes were deemed a wardrobe essential in 1980’s The Official Preppy Handbook, a tongue-in-cheek satire of young upper crust types.

This spring, the iconic nautical brand has joined forces with New York-based fashion brand Milly to produce a limited-edition footwear collection that infuses designer Michelle Smith’s whimsical, youthful, uptown chic aesthetic into traditional Sperry Top-Sider silhouettes. The collection consists of 13 styles ranging from lace-less, slip-on, low-top  canvas sneakers to covered wedges with rope-covered heels and loafer-like uppers.

Among the highlights is the Milly for Sperry Top-Sider Authentic Original Platform ($225 at Sperry.com), pictured first and fifth above, which is available in three colorways: navy canvas with white leather trim, white canvas with cognac leather trim, and a vermilion-and-green rose print canvas with cognac leather trim. This sporty but sophisticated silhouette features a rounded toe, a chunky rope-covered heel and platform, leather piping with golden metal eyelets, and  a cord threaded through these eyelets and tied into a dainty bow at the front.

Other fashion-forward styles include the Milly for Sperry Top-Sider Southport Ghillie ($195 available at Sperry.com), pictured last above, an ankle-wrap sandal with a canvas-covered wedge heel and platform, along with three tobacco-colored leather tabs on either side through which braided nautical rope laces are threaded.  The wrap-around sandal is available in the same Italian vintage rose garden print peppered throughout the collection, a pattern that Michelle Smith introduced with her Peggy Guggenheim-inspired Spring/Summer 2011 collection. This particular pattern has an artsy, museum-worthy feel due to the brushstroke-like effect used to create the print and the rich, vivacious, flamboyant colors selected.

The rose pattern, then, also appears on such styles as the Milly for Sperry Top-Sider CVO($90 at Sperry.com), pictured fourth from top, a slip-on, lace-less canvas sneaker with a vulcanized construction and a rubber outsole that will give you the necessary traction when navigating along slippery surfaces. The CVO style is also available in a coral canvas color and a navy links pattern (pictured second from top), which seems to reference interlocking chain links along with woven nautical ropes.

Those of you who have always appreciated the clean silhouette of boat shoes but couldn’t dream of cladding your feet in anything other than heels will appreciate the height boost offered by the Milly for Sperry Top-Sider Cunard ($195 at Sperry.com), shown third from top, available in either a geranium red or a navy blue color. These wedge shoes feature patent leather uppers, a rope-covered heel, jaunty eyelets, and a preppy leather trim.

The Milly for Sperry Top-Sider collection is available now at SperryTopSider.com, along with Sperry Top-Sider stores, Nordstrom, Saks Fifth Avenue, Bloomingdale’s and Bergdorf Goodman retailers, and the Milly Madison Avenue flagship store in NYC.
