Oscars 2012 Beauty Report: Gwyneth Paltrow’s Low Ponytail and Bronzed Skin

Most of the best-dressed ladies at the 2012 Academy Awards chose minimalist gowns and simple but elegant makeup and hair looks. Gwyneth Paltrow was perhaps the best example of this less-is-more approach to glamour, opting for an exquisitely structured white Tom Ford gown with clean and crisp lines and topping the dress with a matching floor-length cape.

Frédéric Fekkai stylist Adir Abergel created a refined, clean look for Paltrow: a below-the-nape ponytail. To create the look, Abergel started by applying the Fekkai Coiff Contrôle Ironless Straightening Balm to Paltrow’s damp hair, working the product in from roots to ends.Next, he created  a strong side part, positioning it directly above the center of her left pupil, and combed the hair towards the right. Once the part had been created, he blow-dried the hair using a round brush and followed by flat ironing strands. To give the hair shine, he applied the Fekkai Advanced Brilliant Glossing Cream from the roots to the ends. Next, he pulled the hair back as if creating a low ponytail but tied the strands slightly below the nape of the neck, making the style appear a bit more simultaneous and less structured since this allowed the sides of the hair to appear a bit looser. Last, he sprayed the Fekkai Sheer Hold Hairspray to secure and seal the look.

Though many starlets might have been tempted to wear a statement lip when all the other elements of their looks were so simple — from the white dress to the lack of earrings or statement necklaces and the minimalist hairstyle — Paltrow focused only on having her skin glow enough to make her look demurely bronzed in her white gown. NARS worked with celebrity makeup artist Leslie Lopez to create Paltrow’s sun-kissed look.

The key to creating the look was applying the new lightweight NARS Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer SPF 30 to Paltrow’s face, neck and décolletage, then patting the peachy pink Super Orgasm Illuminator  onto the apples of the cheeks. Eyes were given a metallic sheen by sweeping the champagne gold shade in the NARS Alhambra Duo Eyeshadow to the lids, emphasized by tracing the lash line closely with a Maybelline brown liquid eyeliner, then finished with a couple of coats of the NARS Larger Than Life Volumizing Mascara. Paltrow’s lips were given a touch of color with the NARS Odalisque Larger Than Life Lip Gloss, a sheer cantaloupe pink hue with an even, mirror-like sheen.

As a finishing touch, Lopez applied the St. Tropez Gold Skin Illuminator to Paltrow’s cheekbones, as well as along the brow bone area and atop collarbones.
