Mattijs x United Nude Spring 2012 Collection — A Space-Aged Siren Song
Since launching his namesake brand in 2008, Dutch fashion designer Mattijs Van Bergen has displayd a knack for integrating pleats into his work, layering them in interesting ways that create a sense of fluidity without sacrificing his tailoring work or the garments’ construction elements. The Mattijs AW12 runway show during Amsterdam Fashion Week showcased the most powerful tools in the designer’s arsenal, with avant-garde yet surprisingly wearable pieces inspired by science fiction vixens. Rather than the black hole ebony and the molten silver and gold hues associated with cyborgs and spacecrafts, Mattijs relied on a magical, fantasy-inducing color scheme, relying on dark galactic blues, electrifying Uranus-worthy cobalt and light blue, luminous copper and gold shades worthy of star clusters and meteor formations, ethereal and nebula-inspired aqua and teal hues, and cosmic purple and red violet tones reminiscent of the M27 Nebula. The looks that hit the runway, then, included slinky shimmering gold leggings paired with copper-colored, long-sleeved tops exploding with ruffles to create a cocoon-like effect; an asymmetrical, deep teal, floor-length gown with a single billowing, kimono-esue sleeve, and slim vertical pleats; multi-tiered navy chiffon and tulle maxi skirts with hand-painted gold star designs; and lovely knee-length dresses with swinging skirts featuring slim knife pleats and accordion-shaped cut-outs along the chest.
Most of the looks seen at the fashion show, held on February 5th at the Heineken Music Hall, were punctuated with stunning shoes that incorporated some of the collection’s predominant aesthetic elements — from the color scheme to the usage of pleats and cut-out shapes. The shoes were part of a collaboration between Mattijs and architectural shoe company United Nude.
As with United Nude’s previous collaborations with fashion-forward designer Iris Van Herpen, the footwear seen at the Mattijs AW12 runway show will now be available to the masses as part of the limited-edition Mattijs x United Nude Spring 2012 collection.
The capsule collection is comprised of one silhouette in multiple color schemes. In essence, the shoe is an ankle-length boot, but it features layered pleats all over its surface, an open toe, a teardrop-shaped cut-out at the vamp, and rounded sides with a fan-like, accordion-esque shape that mimics the curves of a mermaid’s tale.
You can choose between a minty aqua leather number, a soft black suede style, a robust indigo blue suede shoe, a copper-colored suede bootie with golden patches adding an almost tactile sensation, and a metallic leather style in a greenish blue color with an antique gold leaf finish creating a cosmic feel.
The Mattijs x United Nude shoes retail for $595 and are available for pre-order at UnitedNude.com.
