MAC Chen Man Love And Water Collection Makes Waves

Beijing-based fashion photographer Chen Man tried to fuse together Eastern and Western cultures and aesthetics when designing the limited-edition MAC Chen Man Love and Water Collection while also searching for ways to interpret water and love, the collection’s core themes, via color. In keeping with the aquatic heme, blues abound in the collection — from cobalt to aquamarine, sky blue, azure,  teal, and a nearly violet bluebell hue. The amorous theme, meanwhile, is addressed via sweet shades of pink ranging from soft golden rose and cool lavender pink tones to more richly pigmented honeysuckle pink and peony pink shades. Hints of taupe, lavender, violet, white, and bronzed brown complete the collection’s color palette.

Rather than overwhelm consumers with product options, this MAC collection offers a well-edited selection, with two Lipstick and Lipglass hues, two Nail Lacquer colors, a Pigment hue and a Reflects Glitter shade, one Beauty Powder palette, two Fluidline gel eyeliner pots, and three new marbled Mineralize Eye Shadow Duos.

Each of the three Mineralize Eye Shadow Duos is packaged into its round  compact so as to resemble the yin and yang symbol, with the darker eye shadow color on one side and the lighter one on the other, the two tones divided along the center by an undulating, S-shaped line.

After the jump, you’ll find details on all the products in the MAC Chen Man collection, along with swatches of the various offerings.

As previously stated, the collection includes three MAC Mineralize Eye Shadow Duo ($20 at MACcosmetics.com) hues: Supersweet, which features a mixture of rose, gold, and bronze tones on one side and a frosted golden pink hue on the other half; Love Cycle, which features a mélange of sky blue, pearly white, and cobalt blue tones in a swirling pattern and, on the other side, a deep sapphire color with a frosted finish and a touch of aqua-colored glimmer; and Pink Union, which features one side with a soft, lavender-tinged pink baked with a mix of taupe and bronzed brown tones, and a side with a frosted dark violet color with fine silvery glimmer.

The darker tone in the MAC Love Cycle Mineralize Eye Shadow Duo is a play on the traditional Mandarin blue seen in traditional Chinoiserie ceramic plates, while the lighter shade feels glacial and frosty. The darker tone in the Pink Union Mineralize Eye Shadow Duo, meanwhile, is reminiscent of the violet in which the mudan flower (tree peony) is commonly seen, while the frosted pink hue has subtle lavender undertones and a slightly dirty feel thanks to the taupe and brown tones baked into the solid mineral color.

These Mineralize Eye Shadow Duos are simply stunning — they’re richly pigmented, smooth onto skin effortlessly, and feature great depth and dimension, along with an alluring, dewy luster.

Below, you’ll find swatches of the Love Cycle and Pink Union eye shadow duos:

When you want a truly theatrical look, you’ll want to reach for a truly concentrated color like one of MAC’s loose pigments. The new MAC Pigment in Naval Blue ($20 at MACcosmetics.com) captures the beautiful yet enigmatic quality of the open sea under a blackened sky — the color is nearly abysmal in its darkness, with just a hint of royal blue elevating it from the carbon black level, and ultra fine light blue and silver pearls providing a twinkling effect.

The MAC Reflects Glitter in Reflects Blue ($20 at MACcosmetics.com), meanwhile, is practically colorless — in fatc, it appears white in its cylindrical jar. When applied to the skin, however, the gliter particles appear to be a frosty blue shade reminiscent of icicle fragments. The base of the color, meanwhile, is almost clear — a very translucent, snow powder-like white.

Below, you’ll find swatches of the Naval Blue pigment and the Reflects Blue glitter. As you’ll see, you can barely see the glitter swatch since the base is so light and it doesn’t adhere particularly well to the skin (unless, that is, you use a stickier base like a cream color, gloss, or even Vaseline).

Next, you’ll find two MAC Fluidline  ($15 each at MACcosmetics.com) shades that work perfectly given the collection’s aquatic inspiration: Blacktrack, a flat black hue, and Waveline, a true navy blue with sparse gold pearl particles.

Though these aren’t new releases, these makeup bag essentials have been repackaged for the MAC Chen Man collection and woven into the overall cosmetics narrative. The  MAC Clear Gloss ($19 at MACcosmetics.com) can, of course, be used to add a vinyl-like sheen to the pout or it ca be dabbed on lids to create a seductive glossy eye upon which you can layer any pigment or glitter. To give lashes greater intensity, you can finish any eye look with the MAC Zoom Fast Black Lash Mascara ($15 at MACcosmetics.com) in Carbon Black and, to keep brows in place and make them appear well-groomed, you can brush the  MAC Brow Set in Clear ($15 at MACcosmetics.com) atop those hairy caterpillars above your eyes.

Two new shades of MAC Lipstick ($14.50 each at MACcosmetics.com) convey the romantic sentiment Chen Man desired. First, there’s Budding Love, a pale lavender pink with a creamy texture and lustrous finish; and second, there’s Force of Love, a vivid honeysuckle pink with a matte finish and a smooth creamy texture that captures the whimsy of spring flings and optimism of newfound loves.

Below, you’ll find a swatch of the Force of Love lipstick:

The two new MAC Lipglass ($14.50 each at MACcosmetics.com) shades introduced in the MAC Chen Man collection have the same names as their lipstick counterparts (Budding Love and Force of Love) and essentially replicate their tonalities, albeit with the classic Lipglass sheen.

To complete the pink and blue duality at the core of this collection, Chen Man envisioned these two new MAC Nail Lacquer ($16 at MACcosmetics.com) shades: Breezy Blue, a rich and creamy shade reminiscent of a field of bluebells; and Pinkly Fresh, a clean, mid-tone pink with blue undertones and a creamy finish.
