Let the Good Times Roll with the New MAC Extended Play Lash Mascara
I’ll admit it: MAC Cosmetics releases new mascaras so often that it’s hard to keep up. And, more often than not, I find the differences between them negligible. I’ve always been partial to the Studio Fix Lash Mascara since it’s so richly pigmented and helps to both define and lift lashes, curling them as it coats them with ultra rich color, and, to some degree, to the Zoom Lash Mascara, which makes the lash line appear more dense while also separating lashes, minimizing clumping and preventing hairs from sticking together (a look I’ve never found appealing, even when Twiggy made her spiky lashes a mod beauty statement). Beyond that, I’ve had the same lukewarm reaction to the Opulash, Plush Lash, False Lashes, and Haute & Naughty Lash mascaras — they’re quality products and their performance is far from dubious, but they also didn’t wow me, didn’t excite me.
Given my tepid response to so many MAC mascaras, then, I didn’t have too high expectations for the new MAC Extended Play Lash Mascara ($15 at MACcosmetics.com). In fact, my main reason for trying it was its sleek aquatic blue tube, which was practically beckoning for my attention. Once I twisted off the mascara cap and examined the applicator brush, I was instantly intrigued as it looked considerably longer and slimmer than those of previous MAC mascara releases. And, as it turns out, the slim-line brush design is precisely what makes this mascara so effective, gently bending lashes upward and curling them for greater definition and a more youthful look, making each hair appear longer and plumper, and infusing a surge of glossy, petroleum-like black color for major drama.
I’ve worn the MAC Extended Play Lash Mascara for periods spanning 8 hours without the color growing dull and without having any flaky bits emerge as the day elapsed. That being said, the mascara comes off incredibly easily — face wash and water will suffice — which is great news when the weather is mild but problematic if rain is in the forecast or if it’s so hot and humid that perspiration is guaranteed. But for me, that just means I’d apply a coat of Anastasia’s Lash Genius atop my MAC Extended Play Mascara to make it waterproof without compromising its amazing finish and texture.
After the jump, you’ll find some photos in which I’m wearing the Extended Play Lash Mascara so you can see how much blacker and longer my lashes appear. It’s perfect for all you femme fatales!
As promised, below you’ll find some photos in which I’m wearing the MAC Extended Play Lash Mascara. The second picture below is perhaps the most telling since it illustrates how the mascara manages to curl lashes upward (I didn’t use an eyelash curler prior to application so that upturned look is really the handiwork of the mascara), how it delivers intense color without leaving lashes looking weighed down and clumpy, and how it elongates each individual hair.
