Jett Set Go — Modern Vice Unveils the Jett Messenger Bag
Sisters Natalie and Dylana Suarez — of the fashion blogs Natalie Off Duty and Color Me Nana, respectively — are vying for the often coveted “it” status cyclically designated to street style bloggers who, uhm, take pretty photos of themselves (preferably in exotic locales that showcase how well traveled and, it follows, well-off financially they are) and then write two to three sentences beneath these shots that read like journal entries from a seventeen-year-old girl. Yes, unfortunately, the publishing world has been reduced to drivel, and the blogosphere has emerged as an ongoing “Look at Me!” marathon, with substance being overlooked time and time again and emphasis being placed primarily on — you guessed it — pretty pictures. In other words, most people now have the same interests as toddlers in the board book stage, their eyes widening as they point at colorful pictures. Not exactly encouraging news about the future of our youth. But hate it or love it, that’s the name of the game, and these girls are clearly playing it well: both have a sharp sense of style (Natalie more so) and the quality of their photos can range from dreamy to editorial.
After teaming up with New York-based footwear brand Modern Vice to co-design the Benni and Jett boots last year, both stylish numbers in their own right, the Suarez sisters have added handbags to the Modern Vice x Natalie & Dylana Suarez collection.
The Jett Messenger, pictured in Cognac Leather at top and in Brick Red Suede at bottom, constitutes Modern Vice’s first handbag style. As its name implies, the bag nods to the Modern Vice Jett Boot’s own aesthetic. Whereas the Jett Boot boasts a slightly androgynous feel thanks to the low, square wooden heel, the triple monk strap construction along the vamp, the D-ring buckles securing these straps, and the fringed kiltie accent below the base of the tongue, the Jett Messenger Bag has a decidedly feminine yet free-spirited look. But, of course, the similarities between the two abound: the tassel accents adorning the front strap of the Jett Messenger bag also nod to the type of classic look we associate with men’s loafers while knotted drawstring along the sides infuse a Bohemian, laid-back vibe. Most importantly, the bag’s top flap features pleat-like slithers that fan out resembling the ridges of a seashell. The leather or suede material used to fabricate each bag, then, is carefully and strategically slashed along the top rim of the bag and below the drawstring and tassel detail at its center, creating the illusion of fringe, while each slither’s clean, triangular bottom edges add a sense of order and neatness. The end result is a bag that nods to the kiltie accent that’s so pivotal to the Jett Boots’ aesthetic DNA.
Handmade and designed in NYC, each Jett Messenger retails for $498 and is available at ModernVice.com
