The Byrne Legacy — Modern Vice Collaborates with Fiona Byrne on the new American Flag Bond Boot
After several successful design collaborations with street style bloggers Natalie and Dylana Suarez (of the blogs Natalie Off Duty and Color Me Nana, respectively), New York-based footwear company Modern Vice seems to be expanding its pool of muses, this time finding inspiration in the Lower East Side aesthetic of Fiona Byrne, a nightlife and lifestyle journalist with a distinctive platinum bob, a mainstay on the VIP list of every buzzed-about party and event, and the founder of the fashion and lifestyle blog The Byrne Notice. The fruits of the collaboration with Byrne: the Modern Vice x Fiona Byrne American Flag Bond Boot ($395 at Shop.ModernVice.com), unveiled right on time for the Fourth of July holiday.
Handcrafted at the Adoni factory in Manhattan’s Garment District, the boot is made of heavily distressed leather for a vintage, worn-in, lived-in look. Like a short cowboy boot, this one features a chunky wooden heel and an almond shaped toe, but the uppers feature a patriotic vibe, with horizontal red-and-white straps all along the vamp and quarters and a dark blue backdrop with white stars positioned along the toe , the lower side panels, and the bottom half of heel counter.I personally love the contrast between the star print and the striped pattern — particularly how, along the front of the boot, the leather overlay featuring the star print extends upwards in the very center of the boot, creating these rounded nooks on either side that are reminiscent of wave troughs. The red lining of the side zipper also adds a nice punch to the design — particularly given that the distressed leather makes the boot more muted than it would otherwise be.
Typically, I’d shudder at the thought of wearing a flag print anything — mainly because I wouldn’t want to look like an Uncle Sam poster — but I can totally picture myself wearing the Modern Vice x Fiona Byrne American Flag Bond boots with everything from a short sundress to denim cut-off shorts (perfect for a Daisy Duke vibe). In part, my appreciation for this style stems from the fact that the flag design doesn’t feel overpowering. Instead, the distressed uppers — from the crackled surface areas to the flaky bits and the overall sepia tone — give the boots a saloon-worthy, Old West vibe.
The boots are currently available for pre-order at ModernVice.com. They officially drop on July 4th and only a limited number of boots were produced, so act quick!
