The fifth collaboration between all-American footwear brand Converse and California-based, surf-inspired, street chic fashion lifestyle brand Stüssy is rolling out just in time for the latter’s 35th anniversary. Each footwear style in the limited-edition Converse Chuck Taylor All Star ‘70 Stüssy 35 Collection, then, tips its hat — er, its toes — to Stüssy’s signature aesthetic and its emphasis on strong and graphic prints. Each canvas sneaker, then, features a modern take on Süssy’s signature “Tom Tom” print, which was developed in the late 1980s and originally integrated hand-drawn geometric doodles, tribal symbols, and stick figure characters. Over the years, the “Tom Tom” prints have been constantly reinvented, with some versions including chevron stripes, spiraling lines, and domino-like tabs arranged into frenetic horizontal rows.

In the case of the two sneaker styles within the Converse Chuck Taylor All Star ’70 Stüssy 35 Collection, the uppers feature a custom-engineered version of the Tom Tom print layered with multi-dimensional embroidery to further emphasize the zigzagging chevron stripes, playful dots, and crown motifs while also creating an interesting textural juxtaposition and adding depth and dimension to the designs.

The low-cut Converse Chuck Taylor All Star ’70 Stüssy Tom Tom Ox ($125 at Stussy.com), available in a blue colorway, was crafted using the original ’70s shoe model, hence the slightly retro vibe created via the exaggerated rubber sole and toe cap and the heavier duty canvas uppers. To update the style for 2015, however, the sneaker features woven-in tricolor stripes arranged into a chevron pattern, and rows of slim triangles with rounded tips resembling crown prongs. Even the monochromatic heel stays add a striking touch to these collectable designs.

The Converse Chuck Taylor All Star ’70 Stüssy Tom Tom Hi ($130 at Stussy.com), meanwhile, features denim-like black canvas uppers with deep black and gray motifs embroidered all over the side panels, tongue, and heel counter. Because of its greater height, the side panels of this sneaker showcase a clear pattern, with chevron stripes along the lower third and the upper third and slimmer peaks embroidered along the center, in between the two banded strips with the zigzagging lines.

Both sneakers are available now at Stüssy stores and Stüssy.com.
