How The Dove Beauty Bar Rescued My Winter Dry Skin

Maintaining smooth and hydrated skin throughout the winter season — not to mention a radiant complexion —can often feel like a nearly impossible feat. As temperatures plummet and humidity levels decrease outside, the water content within our own skin tends to diminish at a faster rate, leaving skin feeling dry, tight, itchy and even flaky or patchy. Indoor heaters are also a culprit for winter dryness since they further dehydrate the skin. And those long baths and showers we so enjoy taking when it’s positively frigid outside? They tend to aggravate the problem, depleting much-needed natural oils found in the skin’s surface. This season, those of us in the Northeast have also been handed a rather peculiar challenge: tending to our skin when the weather is in constant flux, dropping to sub-zero temperatures one week and then rising to the 50-degree mark the next. Despite these factors, it is possible to survive the winter season and enjoy healthy and luminous skin throughout this often taxing period — and it starts with developing a skincare routine that’s designed to face the aforementioned challenges head on. An effective, gentle, and hydrating cleanser constitutes the building block of any skincare regimen, the foundation upon which the glorious tower of beautiful skin is erected.

To that end, I ditched the soap for one full week and, instead, relied solely on the Dove Beauty Bar ($3.79 for a two-pack at drugstores) to cleanse both my body and my face. As someone whose bathroom is always cluttered with beauty products — much to the chagrin of my husband — I was dubious about the idea of using only one product to wash both my body and my face. How could one cleanser possibly address the needs of both my often sensitive complexion and my body? I thought. Would it be mild enough to cleanse my complexion without triggering any breakouts? And how would I adjust to using a solid cleanser after years of relying solely on liquid formulas to cleanse both my skin and body? Could I really make the transition? Despite any concerns, I dutifully forged ahead, hoping for the best.

To my surprise, I grew accustomed to using the Dove Beauty Bar rather rapidly. Once I got used to the sensation of holding the Dove Beauty Bar in my hands and gliding it over my skin (as opposed to dispensing a gel- or cream-based formula and working that into an emulsion), I was surprised by how much I enjoyed my newly simplified and streamlined cleansing routine. I could just hop into the shower, reach for the Dove Beauty Bar and, with one sweeping movement, create a delightfully sudsy and slippery lather on an entire arm or leg. I could repeat the process as often as necessary, rinse, then reach for the Dove Beauty Bar once again to cleanse my face. My time-consuming, multi-product, intricate cleansing process had now been whittled down for maximum efficiency. What busy woman can’t appreciate that?

Time-saving benefits aside, after a week of using the Dove Beauty Bar, I noticed my skin felt silky smooth, and my face’s once dull, sullen tone had been replaced by a radiant, healthy-looking, vibrant complexion. This can likely be attributed to the Dove White Beauty Bar’s DEFI technology, which blends mild cleansers with a 1/4 moisturizing cream designed to reveal soft, smooth, radiant skin. The #1 dermatologist-recommended bar is also touted as being hypoallergenic and noncomedogenic (meaning it won’t congest pores) and, sure enough, in my week-long test period, my skin responded rather positively to the Dove White Beauty Bar, with no signs of inflammation, redness, breakouts, or dryness on any part of my body or face. Just the opposite: my skin looked lit from within!

Since a picture is worth a thousand words, I’ll share some before-and-after photos that highlight the results. First, the dreaded “before” photo, in which you can clearly see how my complexion looks sullen and dreary, while the skin on my arms is covered with tiny red bumps (the result of dryness):

Now here are two photos taken exactly one week later, after using solely the Dove Beauty Bar to cleanse my face and body:

Notice how much more radiant my complexion looks? Also, if you really examine the second photo, you’ll notice my arms look much smoother and the redness has largely been mitigated. Amazing, right? To think that for less than $5 (the cost of not one, but two Dove Beauty Bars), we could all rescue our winter-dry skin! Talk about #SettingTheBeautyBar!
