#WCW TV Style Icon: The Title Character of Netflix’s Marvel Series “Jessica Jones”
For our second #WCW column, we’re focusing on yet another TV character who is a rebel with a cause: Jessica Jones. Fans of Netflix’s Jessica Jones series, might remember actress Krysten Ritter sporting lots of low-key urban-flavored gear: hooded sweatshirts, distresses jeans, leather motorcycle jackets, fingerless gloves, a knit infinity scarf, and plenty of tank tops and henley tees over chunky gray, navy, and black sweaters. Below, we’ve included some garments, accessories, and other miscellaneous items that would make Jessica Jones smile (and she’s not exactly one to flash her pearly whites often after the scarring experience of Kilgrave controlling her mind and forcing her to do so!).
Rebecca Minkoff Perforated Wes Moto Jacket, $498. Available at RebeccaMinkoff.com
Minkoff has mastered the art of designing a motorcycle jacket that exudes toughness through heavy-duty zippers, snappy lapels, and straps, but still manages to hug the body in a way that feels feminine and not cumbersome. This one features neoprene accents for an even better fit and more ease of movement — a must for Jessica Jones since her P.I. work often has her climbing up fire escape ladders.
Joe Fresh Classic Tank in Grey Mix, $8. Available at JoeFresh.com
The key to building a Jessica Jones-worthy wardrobe is to stack up on basics — particularly sleeveless tanks in moody shades like gray, navy, and black. This Joe Fresh jersey tank, made of 95% cotton and featuring 5% spandex for a bit of stretch, is ideal for layering.
Rag & Bone Dre Distressed Brigade Slim BF Jean, $209. Available at IntermixOnline.com
Jessica Jones wearing a mini skirt or a dress? As if! One of the coolest things about the way Jessica Jones is depicted is precisely how she’s not sexualized — yes, she is a sexual being and she enjoys her romps with Luke Cage, but she doesn’t need to be out there fighting crime in a mini skirt or bustier. Her “uniform,” so to speak, consists of distressed boyfriend jeans (much like these from Rag & Bone), solid tees and tanks, chunky sweaters of hooded sweatshirts, and a black leather motorcycle jacket.
GAP Twisted Knit Sweater, $49.95. Available at GAP.com
Living in the Hell’s Kitchen area of New York City, Jessica Jones has to stack up on warm knits if she wants to keep warm during the winter season. After all, she has super strength, but she’s not immune to the cold! This knit sweater, which features a relaxed fit, would speak to our reluctant superhero’s fashion sensibilities.
Ash Touch Boot in Black Antique Leather, $398. Available at AshUSA.com
Biker boots are a key element in Jessica Jones’s wardrobe. Sure, hers don’t feature the silver-toned pyramid studs that cover the 6″ shafts of these Ash boots, but that’s why she could use a bit of an upgrade! Exuding confidence and a rebellious attitude, these boots capture Jessica’s anti-establishment views and her not-so-sunny view of the world.
Penfield Valleyview Checked Flannel Shirt, $85. Available exclusively at Madewell.com
Cuddle Love Light Grey Infinity Scarf, $24. Available at Lulus.com
She rarely ever wears a hat, but Jessica Jones does guard herself against the cold winter wind with a chunky infinity scarf in a heather gray hue that resembles the one shown here.
Mighty Fine Jessica Jones No. 1 T-Shirt, $15. Available at WeLoveFine.com
Every Wednesday, Mighty Fine introduces a new T-shirt design featuring original artwork inspired by a character from the Marvel Universe as part of Marvel and WeLoveFine’s exclusive Comic Cover T-Shirt Program. One of the latest launches is this stunning Jessica Jones t-shirt, which features the handiwork of penciller Michael Gaydos and artist David Mack.
H&M Hooded Sweatshirt Jacket, $19.99. Available at HM.com
Whether she’s trying to blend into the crowds in order to trail a cheating spouse and catch them in flagrante (lest we forget, she is the owner of the private eye outfit Alias Investigations) or trying to avoid detection from Kilgrave, Jessica Jones loves to shield her face with a nice cozy hoodie. This navy piece from H&M looks just like something Jones would wear under her leather jacket.
Rothco Vintage Canvas Paratrooper Bag, $22.99. Available at UncleSams.com
Clutches and top handle purses aren’t Jessica Jones’ bag. Instead, she prefers going hands-free with a cross-body messenger bag that has a lived-in feel. Her favorite, of course, is an olive green Army number much like the one pictured here. Measuring 15″ in length, 11″ in height and 4″ in depth, this sturdy canvas bag features 3 inner compartments and 1 outer compartment — perfect for stashing cameras, cell phones, keys, and Acer laptops.
T by Alexander Wang Ribbed Knit Tank Top, $150. Available at Farfetch.com
Another layering essential, this black wool ribbed knit tank top features tiny front button fastenings for a sexy detail.
UGG Cable Knit Fingerless Gloves, $45. Available at Shop.Nordstrom.com
Fingerless gloves seem to be synonymous with vigilante style — and, sure enough, Jones rarely goes out without her knuckle-grazing knit accessories. These UGG ones feature a classic cable-knit pattern and are made of a wool, nylon, and acrylic blend.
Wild Turkey 101 Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey $32.63. Available at TheWhiskyExchange.com
The glass pane on her front door may be broken, and there might be little to no food in her fridge, but Jessica Jones will always have some top-notch bourbon right by her desk — specifically, Wild Turkey 101. Granted, Jesica Jones a bit of an alcoholic (and that’s a problem!!) but she does have great taste in booze. This power-packed bourbon smells spicy and peppery, with just a bit of toffee sweetness, and has a unique taste that blends notes of cinnamon, clove, and nutmeg with toasted hazelnut and a faint minty note. Just remember, y’all: moderation is key!
L.L. Bean Waffle-Knit Henley, $32.95. Available at LLBean.com
Long-sleeved henley shirts really are timeless. Jessica Jones would love the comfort provided by this waffle knit piece, which features a touch of spandex to help the top retain its shape, as well as a ribbed neckline and cuffs.
Mackage Siri Flap Wool Coat with Shawl Collar, $690. Available at Mackage.com
When New York City is just too cold to venture outside with a leather moto jacket, Jones reaches for a black wool coat with plenty of leather trimmings and zippers. The cashmere-blend, knee-length Mackage Siri coat would appeal to her with its semi-fitted silhouette, shawl outer collar, zippered inner band collar, built-in hood, leather welt pockets, and black oxide hardware.
Boden Sonia Sweater, $138. Available at BodenUSA.com
